About Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a healing physical therapy which originated in Japan. Since the 1970's Shiatsu has developed internationally and is now widely used throughout the world. It incorporates influences from both Oriental Medicine and Western therapies.

The practitioner applies pressure with palms, thumbs and elbows along energy channels (meridians) to stimulate the body's natural healing power. Rotations and gentle stretches may be used to release tension in the body. Shiatsu is characterized by its great simplicity and is a deeply relaxing therapy that considers the whole person. It can be a gateway to acceptance and healing.

How can Shiatsu help you

Shiatsu helps to relieve tension and stress and it can support you in moving towards better vitality and health. Shiatsu can assist in the prevention and treatment of many conditions, including:

  • back pain
  • neck and shoulder stiffness
  • headaches and migraines
  • menstrual problems
  • digestive problems
  • fatigue
  • anxiety and depression

A recent study by Professor Long at Leeds University shows that Shiatsu significantly reduces symptoms of tension and stress as well as problems with muscles, joints and body structure, including back pain and joint pain.

You don't need to have something wrong with you to benefit from Shiatsu! This independent academic study also proves that Shiatsu improves your sense of wellbeing and that it prevents stress related disorders.

What happens during a treatment

Each session lasts approximately one hour and takes place on a padded mat or futon at floor level. It is possible to receive Shiatsu sitting on a chair if you have mobility problems. The treatment involves applying pressure using hands, thumbs, elbows, knees or feet. Shiatsu can involve stretches and rotations of joints and limbs.

Guidelines for receiving Shiatsu

Shiatsu is received through loose clothing. Please wear loose, comfortable and warm clothing (e.g. tracksuit trousers, sweatshirt, cotton socks). If at all possible avoid strenuous or stressful activities after your session and drink plenty of water.

When Shiatsu should be avoided

Shiatsu is a very safe therapy, but it should be avoided if you:

  • have an infectious disease
  • are suffering from any acute, feverish illness
  • have internal bleeding or blood clots
  • have had a major operation during the last 3 months

Please inform me of any condition that has been diagnosed by a doctor.
